Red Flag Bearer

Summary

Red Flag Bearer is a dating simulator game where you take on a role of a new boyfriend in a polyamorous relationship of 4 guys. However, you have an ulterior motive. You want to get revenge on one of the 4 who has killed your husband a few months prier. When your dead husband comes back as a ghost to tell you the perfect way to get revenge that involves a week long cruise you couldn’t ignore the opportunity. As you play the game you go on dates over the course of the week with your new found boyfriends while trying to conceal your red flags.

What I Did

I wrote the game which consists of a lot of dates and dialogue choices. I also then implemented it into the game and formatted the files so it would work correctly with the file reader. I also fixed a lot of bugs and helped with some coding. Also, I made some of the location backgrounds in photoshop.

What I Learned

I learned a lot from working on this project. This game required a lot of teamwork to get the whole project to be cohesive, as we were only working in one scene in unity. Alongside this, I had to work to make sure that everything fit together well and matched. The narrative, engine we made to run the story which included tools that could change how some things are read, the music and sound effects to accompany everything, and the art. This project was amazing as in it made the whole team work so well and be positive influences on each other. From morale support to bouncing ideas between each other in a somewhat serious absurd game. I also learned a ton about writing for games with the element of choice. The game is designed to force the player to make choices with who they go out with alongside what they want to say on a date. Alongside this, the game can take so many different directions that I learned how to map out the dates and how they can affect the future of the game. The hardest part of the writing process me was surprisingly not getting into character but the way the dialogue is shaped. On a date you want to have a conversation that flows with a lot of back and forths, but when you have the restriction on how many times the player can interact it causes me to have to make a conversation where the character will keep talking but keep the flow without the player noticing.
